Unbeaten Spartans preparing for first real trip

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Their longest trip this season was to Detroit, and their only true road game was an hour away.

Now, it's finally time for the Michigan State Spartans to do some real traveling. They leave their home state for the first time when they head west for this weekend's game at Northwestern.

"If we're going to have a special season, we have to win on the road in the Big Ten," quarterback Kirk Cousins said.

The eighth-ranked Spartans played five of their first seven games at home. The only exceptions were against Florida Atlantic at Detroit's Ford Field and a trip to Michigan Stadium to play the Wolverines. The latter wasn't exactly a friendly venue, but it's a lot closer than Evanston, Ill., where the Spartans will bus this week.

It will be the first of two big road games for Michigan State (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten). After facing Northwestern, the Spartans play at Iowa in a game that should have major conference title implications.

"We're sort of starting to get into a little bit of uncharted territory here," coach Mark Dantonio said. "Nobody is going to take any football team we play for granted, especially this weekend going to Chicago."

Northwestern (5-1, 1-1) won its first five games before a 20-17 loss to Purdue on Oct. 9. The Wildcats had last weekend off, giving them extra time to prepare for Michigan State.

The Spartans have stayed undefeated amid trying circumstances. Dantonio had a mild heart attack a month ago, followed by a blood clot in his leg. He coached the last two games from the coaches' box and said his vantage point for the Northwestern game is still to be determined.

"I'm feeling much better, walking much better," he said. "It may be something where you sort of ease into it down there some and up top some, something like that, but we'll make the call probably at game time on that."

The Spartans' schedule hasn't hurt. With Dantonio recovering, the team has been able to stay close to home.

"We've been fortunate when we did play down at Michigan, there were a lot of Spartan fans there — enough to be heard," Dantonio said. "So I think the same will be true in Chicago this weekend because we have such a strong alumni base there. That's the way it's usually been."

Cousins said he knew coming into the season that Michigan State might have a chance to build momentum with so many early games in or near East Lansing.

"We looked at the schedule in the summer ... and knew that was going to be a great help if we wanted to have a special season," he said.

But the Spartans aren't quite there yet. Three of Michigan State's final five games are on the road. The Spartans are No. 7 in the BCS standings, their highest ranking in that formula, but there's a lot of football to be played.

Dantonio said he didn't find out about the new BCS rankings until Monday.

"I refrained from looking at that Sunday night because I want to stay focused," he said. "I think it's a good moment. It's a moment that you can be happy with, but I believe that football teams are measured over the course of 12 games. Right now we're a 7-0 football team. If we falter, we're a 7-5 football team."

Check Out MED-V 2.0 Beta to Ease Transition from XP to Windows 7

Windows 7 has been a homerun for Microsoft--becoming the fastest selling operating system of all time. But, there are still many organizations that can't seem to make the switch from Windows XP due to reliance on legacy applications that aren't . Microsoft has a tool to help IT admins with the transition, though: .

MED-V is short for Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization. MED-V, along with APP-V (Application Virtualization), makes up the virtualization framework of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP). This week, Microsoft announced the availability of the public beta for MED-V 2.0.

The traditional approach to upgrading to a new operating system platform doesn't work when there are incompatible applications or devices. A post onexplains that desktop deployments typically rely on, "using methods that they have fine-tuned over the years with large all-inclusive system images containing applications and hardware dependencies."

Desktop virtualization with MED-V provides a bridge between the legacy OS and the new desktop platform. It allows the majority of the infrastructure to migrate to Windows 7 and take advantage of the features and benefits of the latest flagship OS from Microsoft, while providing a lifeline allowing business critical applications that are incompatible with Windows 7 to continue running in a virtual Windows XP environment.

With the updates in MED-V 2.0, Microsoft makes the integration between the host Windows 7 desktop and the virtual Windows XP platform more seamless. USB devices and smartcards can be shared between the host and virtual environments, and access to My Documents is redirected from within the virtual desktop so applications behave exactly as they do in the host system. Legacy Web apps thatcan be automatically redirected to the virtualized environment using wildcards, sites, at the individual Web page level, or by specifying a specific port.

For IT admins, MED-V provides the tools needed to deploy, provision, control, and monitor virtual desktops throughout the company. Usage permissions and Virtual PC settings can be configured centrally, and tools are provided to facilitate troubleshooting and diagnosis of virtual PCs.

Thesays, "If you have legacy Windows XP or Internet Explorer 6/7 applications that are slowing down your Windows 7 deployment plans, don't let them stand in your way. The MED-V team has worked hard to ensure MED-V 2.0 is easy for IT professionals to deploy and manage and seamless for end-users to use."

IT admins should be familiar with the tools and applications in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, and organizations struggling to transition from Windows XP to Windows 7 should take a look at what MED-V 2.0 has to offer.

PLO wants map from U.S. with future Israeli border

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) – The Palestinians are seeking a map from the United States showing where Israel sees its final borders and making clear whether they include Palestinian land and homes, an official said on Wednesday.

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Yasser Abed Rabbo was responding to a U.S. call for the Palestinians to present their own ideas in response to an Israeli proposal they recognize Israel as a Jewish state in return for curbs on settlement building -- a declaration they have long opposed.

"What is required from the American administration and Israel is that they present us with the map of the state of Israel that they want us to recognize," Abed Rabbo told Reuters.

"Is this map on the '67 borders or does it include Palestinian land and the homes we live in?" he said, referring to the year when Israel captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip in a Middle East war.

The settlement issue has derailed U.S.-backed peace talks which began on September 2. Visiting Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sounded an optimistic note.

"I am personally convinced that both leaders, (Israeli) Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu and (Palestinian) President (Mahmoud) Abbas, very much see it as in their respective interest to return to and proceed with direct negotiations," she said.

The Palestinians say they will not resume the U.S.-backed talks until Israel halts settlement building on occupied land where they aim to found a state. An Israeli freeze on new home building in the occupied West Bank expired on September 26.

FREEZE

Netanyahu said on Monday he would be willing to request another freeze from his cabinet if the Palestinians recognised Israel as a Jewish state.

He said it would be a "trust-building step," while some Palestinian and Israeli commentators questioned whether the proposal was only a ploy to try to shift blame onto the Palestinians should the peace process collapse.

The Palestinians ruled out the idea -- something they see as a major concession that would be tantamount to political suicide for a leadership whose credibility has already been badly damaged by the failure of past peace talks.

Clinton told reporters that "both sides are testing out a lot of different approaches, offers, requests between each other."

On Tuesday, U.S. State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley said Netanyahu had "offered his thoughts on both what he's willing to contribute to the process, and what he thinks he needs for his people out of the process."

Washington, Crowley said, hoped the Palestinians would do the same.

"We recognize that Israel is, as it says itself, is a Jewish state," he added.

Abed Rabbo's demand for a map echoed Abbas's call for clear terms of reference for the peace talks.

Netanyahu's predecessor as prime minister, Ehud Olmert, has said he showed Abbas a map offering him 93.5 to 93.7 percent of the West Bank, with the difference made up by a proposed land swap of 5.8 percent and a safe-passage corridor between the territory and the Gaza Strip.

But the Palestinians fear Netanyahu has no intention of allowing the establishment of a viable state they seek in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem, which Israel also captured in 1967 and annexed, as their capital.

"We are ready to recognize, once again, the state of Israel if Washington gives us a map of the borders of that state so we know if they include our land and homes in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem," Abed Rabbo said.

The PLO recognised the state of Israel in 1993 at the outset of the peace process. At the same time, Israel also recognised the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people.
